In 2022, Fung Global Fellow, Wesam Al Asali, now assistant professor at IE School of Architecture and Design, and Sigrid Adriaenssens, professor of civil and environmental engineering and director of the Program in Mechanics, Materials and Structures at Princeton University, received a PIIRS Faculty Projects and Initiatives grant for "Structural Crafts: Developing Vernacular Construction for Sustainable Futures," the building of an unreinforced masonry pavilion on the IE campus in Segovia.

This spring, students in the course “Poetry and War: Translating the Untranslatable” explored Char’s poetry in its historical context and its ongoing “afterlife” in translations around the globe. They explored the Char Papers, held in Princeton University Library’s (PUL) Special Collections. On a spring break trip to France, they met Char’s widow and editor, Marie-Claude Char, who guided them on a literary and historical journey exploring her husband as poet and Resistance leader. Back on campus, their work culminated in a dramatic public reading of the “notebook” in multiple languages, using the students’ own individual translations.

Elke Weber will be the next director of the Princeton Fung Global Fellows Program, an international effort based at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies. She will serve a two-year term, effective July 1, 2022.
Wesam Al Asali, design and innovation lead at IWlab and a 2021-2022 Princeton University Fung Fellow, has been awarded the 2021 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) President’s Medal for Research in the History and Theory category.
